Do Not Use BCI (aka Boonstra Construction, Inc in Oceanside)!!!!

I’m going to keep my review and description of my experience with BCI to be very objective and stating the facts. I’m hoping by reading this you will be saved from the nightmare situation I’m going through with BCI. Most of the info below was included in the submission to the CSLB (Contractors State License Board) already:

Summary:
• I was quoted a range for the bathroom remodel $19K - $30K (164 sq feet)
• The scope of the work was decreased from original quote we decided to just update the bathroom no other changes were made
• At first the work seemed like it was on schedule and moving quickly. Then BCI put only one person on the job that was extremely slow, it seemed like he was learning on our job. It took him 3 days to grout the shower and over a week and half to lay title on the floor.
• The project manager was newly out of college had no real job experience, so we had two people we are paying high hourly rates for that were learning on our job
• The labor hours were adding up beyond belief
• We had no dispute over the material cost because we selected everything, and the pricing were correct.
• Final invoice was for $61.3K, more than double the quote!!!! All of the difference in cost was labor charges for a job that was reduced in scale.
• I began trying to negotiate with the owner (Joey Boonstra), and after a few back and forth e-mails I was directed to only speak to his lawyer
• I did some research and found other complaints about BCI online that were very similar to my situation, so I needed to hire a lawyer to communicate with the BCI lawyer
• I placed a complaint with the CSLB (Contractors State License Board). After talking to the individual assigned the case, they told me that since there have been other complaints against BCI
• Even though I thought it wasn't fair considering the scope had decreased on the project, I offered to pay a total of $30,000 for the completed work (there were minor things that they did not finish and when I said I wasn't going to pay until I spoke with the owner they refused to come back and finish the job)
• I’ve spent countless hours of my own time, while also spending thousands of dollars in lawyer fees to try to get this resolved
• I’ve spoken to other customers of BCI, and they have similar situations are also seeking legal advice on how to proceed. No idea how they still have their license
• BCI also refused to pay their subcontractors and advised them to call me for payments. I felt bad that the subcontractors didn't get their payment, so I paid the cabinet maker what he was owed by BCI. Other subcontractor called looking for payments also.

Again, hoping that by reading this review you will save your time and money and not have to go through the pain of dealing with BCI in the future.

As a business owner, I hate to give a bad review to another business. But, I want to make sure there are less customers who will be victimized by bad business practice.

I have a major dispute with this company with double charges. During my project, they also installed fixtures in my restrooms that were not new and looked in my eyes and said they were new fixtures. Later they admitted "they were sitting in their yard, but never used." I sent a text to the owner Scott to replace them with new fixtures, but they never got replaced. Instead, they offered a $350 credit for using the used fixtures in my new restaurant restrooms.

I filed complaint with the contractor's license board for their bad business practice. I hate to give a bad review and this is my only bad review that I have ever given to any business.
