I took my six month old rescue puppy here for a skin condition. He had scaly little patches of hair loss popping up almost overnight. They asked the usual questions like if he was scratching, which he was not, and they did a skin scraping that was negative. The vet said he had a "skin infection" and prescribed an antibiotic and a drug for "itching" called Apoquel, even though I repeated to her he wasn't scratching. The vet tech gave me a pamphlet on the drug for a rebate. After I got home I read the pamphlet and it clearly stated in two different places "Do not give to dogs under twelve months of age." I called and was told the vet was prescribing it "off label". I did some research and the drug can cause serious side effects in young dogs so I returned the drug which was $98 the next day. They did eventually return my money but only after the owner of the clinic told me they use the drug in young dogs even though it can "stunt their growth" and my dog was a "small dog that wasn't going to grow anymore". Seriously that's like telling someone their teenage son isn't going to grow anymore! I took my dog to another vet who took one look and diagnosed him with ringworm, he's a terrier who loves to dig in the dirt. He said if I had given him the Apoquel it would have made it much worse because the drug suppresses the immune system. I realize not every vet is perfect and granted the vet who prescribed the drug was new, she only had her license four months, but the owner making excuses and telling me they prescribed this drug for young dogs even though it clearly warns not to is a clear reason to not trust them with my animals.
